The main approach is at the upper level and entry into the house is through a discreet and modest single door set in a curved single storey height rendered wall.

Планы

There are two key criteria in locating the house on the site: The first is to orientate the house on a north-south aspect; the second is to maintain the 5m distance from the edge of mature crown spreads of existing trees.

The focus of the house is the ‘Big Room’ which is a social space with three distinct zones: The kitchen (1) which is a retreat with a lower ceiling; the central area of the room (2) which is the bubbling heart of the house with a generously high ceiling; and the sunken front area (3) which has spectacular panoramic views of the sea and Beer Head.
Arranged around the ‘Big Room’ are the more private spaces such as the bedrooms, dining room, study, TV/media room, games room, utility room and plant space.
These rooms each have a different character whilst keeping a very direct relationship with the ‘Big Room’.
Consequently the house is ‘socketed’ into the hillside as far as possible without needing to remove excessive spoil from the site.

A prominent hilltop site would favour a house that is settled partly into its surrounding land. Other arrangements could appear either too intrusive or would not be able to take advantage of the stunning views from the site.
